The members and officers of the Shelby Area Democratic Club welcome you to our website. And we welcome you to attend our monthly meetings. Our meetings usually begin with a speaker in an informal, conversational setting. We then have our monthly business meeting. All Democrats and people of goodwill are welcome to attend.

Notice of Annual Meeting

Notice is hereby given of the Annual Meeting of Shelby Area Democratic Club. Said meeting shall be held on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at 7:00 pm in the Sutter Roush Room, 23 East Main Street (Rear), Shelby, Ohio. At said meeting, members shall elect officers for 2012. To vote for officers, members must have been in good standing for at least 90 days prior to the election.

The Nominating Committee has presented the following candidates for officers for 2012: Garland John Gates for president, Michael Fraley for vice president, Rita Scheurer for secretary, and Nadine Morris for treasurer. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor immediately prior to voting at the Annual Meeting.

FDR Society inducts first members

The FDR Society of Shelby has inducted its first members. Life membership has been bestowed upon Iona B. Gates and Eleanor Jean Huss of Shelby and Lucille Critchfield of Ontario.

“These ladies cast their ballots for the most significant President of the 20th Century,” stated Garland John Gates. “We want to recognize that.”

The FDR Society, which was created by the Shelby Area Democratic Club, exists for the sole purpose of honoring men and women who voted for Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The society has neither dues nor meetings.

“The society is soliciting names of FDR voters for recognition,” Gates explained. “They or a family member can submit their names and addresses by calling me at 419-347-3337 or by sending an email to shelbydems@yahoo.com.”

A potential member would have to be at least 88 years old. One need not live in the Shelby area to be a member.

The Origin of the Shelby Area Democratic Club

For over 40 years, the Shelby Area Democratic Club has played an active role in local politics. Here is an excerpt from the group's very first meeting minutes from July 11, 1968:

The first get together of the Shelby Democrats was held on July 11-1968. A picnic at Seltzer Park consisted of a covered dish furnished by each one attending.

Thirty people enjoyed a discussion on the possibility of forming a Democratic club in the Shelby area.

The first officers were elected in September of that year. They were president James Moorehead, first vice president L.D. Ball, second vice president Lonzie McKenzie, recording secretary Mary Stine, and treasurer Thomas Yetzer.

Thanks to those local Democratic pioneers who laid a firm foundation for our club! We owe them a debt of gratitude for a job well done.
